Madoff is the scandal that changes the game. You see, the reason for hiring Captain Carnage is this.
The theory was that Federal Reserve Action turned a down turn into The Great Depression.
If the right policies were taken, that would mean no great era of Liberalism, just some somewhat less conservative "reform." Which would mean simply getting new walnut shells for the shell game.
Therefore, no great meltdown, and the rich would never have to beg the public to bail them out.
Bernanke claimed that even if the Federal Reserve were in a liquidity trap, that he had a secret sauce recipe to fix things without Liberalism. So that's why he got the job: because he claimed that the neo-conservative movement was now smart enough not to make the mistakes of the old one.
Now many of Madoff's clients are liberals, rich liberals, but liberals. However, 50 billion dollars rips a huge hole in the lower upper class of America and the world, especially because the losses will run to more than that, once fees and leverage is taken into account. In all this will wipe out a swath across the very people who have been putting their heels in to stop real liberalism from happening versus a kind of Republican with a Whig liberalism.
Soon the very people who were not supposed to be begging for a bail out, hat in hand from the public, are going to be doing just that.
