WESTLAKE, La. (AP) Mayor Gerald "Wash" Washington was found shot to
death Saturday night in a parking lot just 11 days after being sworn
    into office, authorities said.

Chief Deputy Gary "Stitch" Guillory with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's
Office said Washington, 57, suffered a single gunshot wound. He declined
to say where the bullet struck Washington.

A motorist found Washington's body beside his pickup truck in the
parking lot of the old Mossville High School and called 911 at 9:49
p.m., Guillory said. He said no events were going on at the facility,
which is now used by the Calcasieu Parish school system's department of
    special services.

The weapon was recovered at the scene, Guillory said.

The sheriff's office is investigating the incident. Deputies said early
Sunday they are waiting for a search warrant to inspect the truck.

Washington was sworn in Dec. 19 as mayor of the town about 200 miles
    west of New Orleans.
He was elected in the fall with a 2-to-1 margin
    over opponent Paula Johnson.

His goal was to make Westlake "a place where everybody is somebody a
community that works together, plays together and reaches out to support
and help each other at anytime, not only when crises arise."

Washington succeeded Dudley Dixon, who retired after 24 years in office.
Washington attended at Dixon's retirement party Friday, presenting a
    jacket to his predecessor.

Washington, a lifelong Westlake resident, was a retiree from Conoco Inc.
    and a Vietnam War veteran
