YOUTH ACTIVISTS CALL FOR WITHDRAWAL OF JOHN EDWARDS FROM 2008 PRESIDENTIAL RACE
FOR HIS USE OF QUESTIONABLE CAMPAIGN TACTICS
Special Report From the Creative Youth News Team
August 2nd, 2007
Members of the NYRA-OC, the most politically-active chapter of National Youth Rights Association, have called for the withdrawal of John Edwards from the 2008 Presidential race for his use of questionable campaign tactics. While the President of the NYRA-OC abstained from voting because of her leadership role, the membership was unanimous in its call for the withdrawal of Edwards.
The NYRA-OC's Vice President, Terry M. (age 17), stated that Edwards's video-taped attempt to rig thePresidential debates and the use of scare tactics by his supporters "represent the kind of dirty politics that the older generation has allowed to continue for way too long. Our generation plans to bring in a new kind of politics that relies on honesty and debate." Edwards was caught with his microphone on while discussing a plan that most consider tantamount to election-rigging.
Connor G. (age 17) stated that one of the most disturbing factors was evidence indicating Edwards supporters were working behind the scenes to try to get Dennis Kucinich, the only real anti-war candidate among the Democrats, to withdraw so Edwards could pick up anti-war votes. "That scheme by Edwards to get Kucinich to quit is ridiculous. Why would the most honest candidate in the race withdraw to help a liar and cheat get more votes?"
Simon F (age 15) stated, "Edwards wrote the war resolution. He knew there were no weapons of mass destruction. He lied and convinced a majority of Democrats in the Senate to support the war. He can't just blame Bush, get the peace candidates to withdraw, and then get the support of those hurt by war. His approach is Machiavellian. We are fed up with Machiavellian politics."
Alex H (NYRA-OC Secretary and a national board member) stated that "Edwards has crossed the line. His campaign tactics are straight out of 1984. He would have us believe that 'War is Peace,' 'Freedom is Slavery,' and 'Ignorance is Strength.' He took us to war, but expects us to believe he is for peace. He took away our freedom with USA-PATRIOT while saying security was more important than freedom. At the same time, he expects us to believe he is for freedom. He has been caught in a scheme to silence candidates who disagree with him and to prevent the public from knowing the facts when they vote. He believes ignorance will make the Democrats stronger. We do not need to trade one Big Brother for another."
Terry M. added, "We must go further than calling on Edwards to withdraw. We must actively oppose his election. Political affiliation is irrelevant. He has worked to silence peace candidates. Thousands of Americans died for his lies. Hundreds of these were too young to vote in the last Presidential election before they died. But for Edwards, they might stilll be alive. Let's stand up for those who never got a vote. Let's give them a voice by defeating John Edwards."
NYRA-OC President Natasha H (age 16) pointed out, "Last year, youth activists made a difference in a number of races. Many candidates were successful because of our support. Many were defeated because of our opposition. America's youth can make a difference. We can change the face of politics."
