Media always absolve themselves of responsibility when political institutions break down on their watch. Yet, if the corporate press had done its job during and after Katrina, the horrific violence inflicted on New Orleans Blacks by police and white vigilantes might have been limited, or more quickly punished. “They abdicated their responsibility to be critical in their reporting” on police criminality. “If a few people got killed that was a small price to pay.”
