I've sent him emails with no response (now and several times before although his email address may not be current anymore) and also tried to comment on his new "blog" -- but he is holding comments so that they don't actually show up
I don't know what is up with that dude, seems we've watched in real time as he personally melted down. I can tell you he doesn't respond well to any sort of "hostility" so our best bet is to stay as cool as possible if theres any possibility of dealing with him.

Can we get the information back? Can the dude put the site back up for a few days whilst we transfer? Anyone know?
Can Mike or anyone else pull up the site and transfer it to another domain somehow?

Not sure because the dude is impossible to communicate with (both in that you can't contact him and when you do..)
Some of your questions have to be answered by Mike and he hasn't weighed in yet

More drama ::)
Ha... You're one to talk about drama. Yes. Once upon a time, a small crew here got thrown off of PI for being "Socialists". Then they formed a new board called "PopIndy", which actually had the duality of being terrific but also having no members and nobody even interested in letting anyone in. The guy who did it ("Pinko" around these parts), was the TGV of political conciousness. He went from Ghandi to Marx in about 2 hours... pretty well too. But he left the baggage at the old station. In a fit of "property is theft" and "I don't care about ownership", he left all that eminently reusable writing in the hands of some crackpot friend who is no longer his friend... You can make up the rest.
Meanwhile, PI (Tinoire on this board) decided that "Socialists" were a hell of a lot better than moldy new age pustules growing all over her board. Thus, reconciliation and drama played out in three acts...
It's all good - helps the "growth" process.
Well it's all good except for losing all that material. That is a huge loss.

It is the database we need, not "the site" or the domain name. That is what we have always needed and been denied. I think Rusty has to go to bat for us here. He placed us in that guy's hands.
The hosting company should have a back up of the database. There is no reason on earth why we should not be given that. Then I can just restore the whole thing here at http://socialistindependent.org/popindy, for example. Simple and easy. But mugga - for whatever reason - has been fucking with us. Rusty is the one who entered into the agreement with him, Rusty is the one who knows him.

does anyone have a list of bookmarks or titles to popindi articles? at least some of them are still cached on google, if we want to try to save them:
for example:

I tried this -- there is a widget (or whatever its called) for Firefox that lets you basically "browse" a webpage as Google cache links. Unfortunately the forums themselves are not archived in Google cache meaning it would have to be done thread by thread and page by page I guess..would have to be really targeted
Archive.org is also not generating anything

Can you contact the hosting company?
This is my suggestion too. And the sooner you do it the better. They may not have any archives depending on how the deal was set up but you at least have to ask. Most hosts charge a small fee for this (~$25) and you have to prove that you're related to ownership of that database. If anyone other than that Mugawhatever fellow was listed as an alternate contact, they'll give it to you.
If you went low budget, you may be SOL but even then, it's worth trying before those archives get trashed.
Since he owned the site the entire time, you may be at his mercy to get the archives (unless one of you is still listed as an alternate contact or has admin access to the server). I did a quick whois and didn't see an alternate contact but there could be one in the host's records.
Has anyone contacted this Sean Branch offering to pay for the archives? Sweeten the pot a little if need be.
Mike, they can't give you the database if you can't prove you "own" it. This is one of my huge fears about PI. Can I list you as an alternate contact for PI? If I get into a wreck tomorrow, the bill will still get paid for a while (auto-debit) but if anything goes wrong, PI is SOL and not even Megan, who knew where a few keys were stored, would be able to get it back up. Leftchick has no idea where any of it is. The only tenuous hope would be RichM and I really mean tenuous because the server stuff drove him nuts and he's not listed as an alternate contact though he has/had all my info and password info.

No I have the widget/extension and tried it -- it doesn't work. Gotta go thread by thread (and page by page incidentally which makes it far worse). And you gotta find the thread in question using google search first

Guys whoever said it might be right: it is worth at least $100 to me to get the database for Pop Indy. (and I don't have $100 lol)
And Mike is right, the trouble is you can't get with Rusty or Muga on this. Muga because hes some Burning Man wacko, Rusty because well, Mike and I are not the best candidates to deal with him at any rate.
Btw, did you guys know that you have to PAY $100s to get into Burning Man? I thought that was a joke when I first heard..

I am happy to fork over $100 for the archives as further penance for my mistake a few years ago. If I hadn't gotten stupid, most of that stuff would be at PI so I think I owe you guys that. I just borrowed against my 401K to get ready for this move to Central America and the 15% I put into our employee stock purchase plan was almost doubled so let me do something unselfish for once... if it would help.

We just need the database. All the posts are there formatted so that phpbb will display them correctly. It would take me about 30 minutes to get phpbb running in a sub folder here. Install the database and everything is back as it was. Trying to hand shovel stuff over won't work (will take a long time.)

I think I may have an old backup of PopIndy at my home computer...I can look into it. Remember, Mike, when we were playing around with that? It was a while back but it should have a lot on it. Tin, maybe you mentioned it before but why are you moving to Central America?
PS if everything else hits a wall, I will call him..if no one else volunteers
Because it hit me one day that I'd rather live somewhere where my pittance of a military retirement can meet my basic needs and volunteer my time working with kids and animals, helping people get/stay on their feet (the idea is chickens this time, not goats).
The alternative is slaving away for another 13 years in total misery and trying to survive as a single woman. It's not just the economics of surviving on one income, it's also loneliness. I could leave California, which has become totally unaffordable and survive better elsewhere but I realized if I'm going to move, why not move somewhere where I do some good rather than supporting this system?
I feel like I'm running around in circles over here. Slaving to pay the rent so I have a place to live so I can sleep to rush to work to pay the rent. And it's the same circular frenzy for gas and food. My entire life, as a single woman, is working to live to work tu support a system I can't stand.
I can't find a valid reason for putting up with that when I can take my small retirement and live somewhere on it. The volunteer organizations I've been in touch with are thrilled because they're in desperate need of long-term volunteers.
I may have to set up a catering service but it would be fun to teach poor kids how to make great cakes, great dishes and have a skill of their own.
I used to think I could never leave the US, but that certainly has changed. It sounds like a wonderful adventure to me. Stretching pensions really is the trick, my dad does it by living in a small town in the midwest. He is still close enough to his VA doctors (about 25 miles away from excellent facilities) but the housing and supplies are much less in his area.

Hey guys
I got an email from Muga today. Gotta say that I think there is some miscommunication going on because he seemed pretty reasonable about the whole.
Here is his email response to me:
You guys never made a backup? That's crazy.
Mike and rusty have had tons of time to do stuff like that. I thought you guys aready had it moved off somewhere else.
Sorry I wiped everything to start fresh. It is still possible to get the forum db. My credentials haven't changed and mike and rusty have them. They could make a backup of the database and ftp it down.
See if they can login to the pair.com site and get that handled. I will the leave the database there until you guys get a copy.
There is a database backup created tonight I made it so you can download it from a browser
Its 70meg in size http://seanbranch.com/popIndy.sql.gz

Yep, 70MB unzipped.
That's pretty small itself, at least as relates to the backups created by the forum application itself. However, it seems to me I recall muga mentioning that the backup of the forum application is heavier than the underlying sql data.
Hopefully, you'll be able to get at least a good sized portion of the site data accessible again. Other than that file, he told me the rest is wiped.

Pop Quiz time: What keywords do you remember from PopIndy?
In the event Mike or someone cannot majikly resurrect said board (and I suspect it would be sheer majik given the size of the zip file that remains), it would probably be good to go grab as much and as many cached pages as possible.
A google query like so brings up a number of pages: "site:populistindependent.org asshole"
Natch, that was the first keyword that came to my mind - "asshole"
Why the hell did I not ever make the list anywayz? I thought y'all were outspoken!
Anyway, give it some thought. Plug in some terms and grab the pages if you get some with "cached" links in the google results. Incidentally, there is a firefox extension called "extended copy menu" that, when installed, allows you to right-click and copy selected content as HTML. This could be helpful in allowing Mike to put up static pages quickly - that is, assuming you guys can come up with a bunch of cache links because of your Key Word Total Recall.
May the force be with you. My lame ass is going to bed. I don't grieve what has been lost; having lost so much, I'd have never made it this far if shit like this bugged on me the way it (nonetheless understandably) is buggin' on some of youse guys.

Maybe use the PI archives forum already set up?
Whatever assistance I can give just shoot but I think Mike will prefer to keep things on your current server. Mike, if you want to compare servers, let me know and I'll show you around.

I really like the model we are using - we don't actually host we ARE the host. 24 hour tech from 3 Linux guys (although one of them is something of an ass as BP discovered. We will have to remember which shift Rich is on - I could have wrestled him into shape, but he was was running BP in circles.) There just isn't anyway to improve on what we have (other than shit-canning Rich LOL.) Also, during the last problem, while Rich was beating the crap out of BP I dug in and learned MySQL inside out, which will come in handy now in restoring PopIndy. Sometimes they work faster for someone if the person contacting them doesn't know much. They are always telling me "you should know how to do that Mike." Well, yeah but we are paying you guys LOL.

Any prognostications on the salvaging of the threads from PopIndy?
Anyone actively working on that?
I've tried using various keywords and all you get is a page or two which doesn't give us very much of the original stuff.

Pretty sure Mike is on this, per the post right above yours. haven't found a better way pulling up old threads either

Now that we have the database, it will re-construct itself.

Now that we have the database, it will re-construct itself.
What does that mean? Where is the database and where can it be accessed? Is it just downloading at the present and is there a place (a link, a website, somewhere here or there) where we can go to get the threads.
Where can one see the writing on the screen?
Please explain to the non-techie.

I think the non-technical answer is: hurry up and wait.

Yeah sorry, I didn't explain it well. I am moving a little slowly. The program phpbb will display the data as threads, just as before. I will put the phpbb installation in a subfolder - http://socialistindependent.org/popindy/ and the entire forum will display at that address. It will also be fully functional.

Bogged down trying to get phpbb to read the database. Have tech help request in at the phpbb forum. Many are having the same problem. Considering another option - set up another SMF board and see if I can get it to read the database.
