It starts the debate before we can even get there. How can that be bad?
I'm a thinkin' we should also appropriate the name "Prince" and any other odds and ends that are lyin' around. We should also take over other abandoned identities, ala Naomi Klein, and run them as a collective.

I once thought I knew what "populist" meant, but no longer.
Nice graphic, btw.
It may be too early to ask this, but can the main page be formatted so that blog entries don't stack on top of each other and disappear? Not sure how to describe the alternative, other than point to sites like Huffington Post where portions of several blog entries are available to read on the main page, with a link to the entire entry. (And in our case here, also a link to the discussion forum.)

Sure. I had a lot of plans and ideas and proposals, but I got locked out.
Since organization of documents on the Internet is virtual, there is no reason why things need to disappear or be difficult to find. Unlike a library, you don't need to physically move objects around. It is just a matter of creating efficient ways for visitors to access documents. The path to something is "where" it is - the physical location is not an issue. If you "say" it is "somewhere" it is. Very few tech people working on software and the Internet grasp this, or care about it, and there are very few non-tech people trained in the liberal arts who venture into tech. Beyond this, there is a commercial corruption factor that drives the tech the wrong direction.
Imagine a library where the staff was continually changing the file card system and arbitrarily moving books around to different shelves and you have an idea of the current state of affairs on much of the Internet. Permanent static documents, permanent URLs and logical indexing and easy access are all easy to do. The ongoing encroachment of advertising has a corrosive effect. I am so naive that I could never have imagined a site like DU having ads. No one seems to notice or care that DU is now generating massive amounts of money. How can that be neutral or benign? I know this from buying ads for clients. Effective advertising demands websites that are the opposite of what works best for visitors. "Old" or static content doesn't give a good return on investment for the advertisers. Fluffy, light, and sensationalistic content does. Constantly changing content generates ad revenue. Content - other than fluffy and simple-minded stuff - interferes with the impact of the ads. Advertising is driving Internet software and people's understanding of and expectations for the Internet the same direction that it drove television.
Advertisers don't want you to find things, don't want you to be able to control your own activity on the 'net, don't want you to focus on content or concentrate on anything, don't want intelligent exchanges between people. You are to be dumbed down, confused, made powerless, and merely entertained long enough to keep ads in front of you.
It is not a coincidence that as more and more advertising infiltrates the 'net that it gets harder and harder to do anything constructive, that it gets harder and harder to use, and now it is even difficult to discuss usability and de-centralization and intelligent web design, because the expectations of the users are now shifting to accommodate the needs of the advertisers as well.
The people running a site like DU know which threads, which topics, generate the most revenue. They can monitor that minute to minute effortlessly. "Who do you like? Hillary or Obama?" threads - dozens and dozens of them everyday covering the same ground over and over again, generate the most revenue. Thoughtful posts and in-depth discussions are weak generators of revenue. Since DU became an ad vehicle there has been a steady slide toward the first type of discussion and away from the second.
The public is conditioned to accept ads and more importantly to see them as neutral and benign.

My God, and he is mine, do you wankers have to throw up a poll to decide on every fucking move you make? Is it really necessary to build consensus on every bowel movement that comes down the pike?
If I were a voting cretin like you goons I would've voted STFU megan and everybody else who doesn't see what the new name of this website should be, no I say must BE. And you know what that name is? Of course you don't or you wouldn't have asked me to give it to you. But you know what, I'm not gonna tell ya'. It's my domain, my intellectual property and if you can't respect that then you don't deserve to know anyway. You just don't understand freedom anyway so why should I trust you with this groundbreaking website-discussion group- domain name that would quite frankly light up the skies with it's shining brilliance.
I think what I'm what I'm trying to say here is just a rehash, speakin' of hash, of what we've been trying to get at. That being, uh, aw fuck the dog wants out I'll get back to ya'.
God those circular yellow smilies suck.

Hey there wolf - it's good to see you posting again lately. And actually I save the Paris Hilton quotes just for you guys :)
Kid, if you really are Paris Hilton, I think I may have to cancel the plans to meet up next time I'm in Fla, LOL. I can't be seen with the likes of you, it'll cramp my style (cuz I'm really stylish, I'll tell you what). But the band thing, that would be great, as long as I can make guest appearances with my tambourine. Do they have tambourines in emo music? Wtf is emo music, anyway?

OMG I know who they are. The local kids that work on the farm in the summer turned me on to them. (I am sufficiently eccentric that the kids talk to me although otherwise refusing to communicate with adults.) My Chemical Romance - ROFL. They also got me to do DDR with them - know what that is Kid?

I know what DDR is, yeah but I have no moves whatsoever and DDR is sooooo last year. (mostly the 'no moves' part though). Everybody's onto Guitar Hero now (which I also suck at incidentally)
EDIT: its Dance Dance Revolution for those who don't know and might care. Its that lame video game where you try to match the moves on the screen. I've heard its a good way to attract (teenage) girls but a. I'm not a statutory rapist and b. I have no moves, remember. (more b than a)
EDIT: incidentally, MCR was probably a bad example because their last album wasn't total shit. I didn't like it much but it wasn't the worst and its technically screamo not emo. On the flipside, MCR is the perfect example because every teenage girl loves them and because of their "image'.
Oh, and the last show I was at people were diving into the crowd from the top of ATMs. It was so awesome. I tell you this because I feel the need to establish some "cred" after that little foray into "emo" -- which stands for Emotional/wussy
More background, since I'm rambling. The emo style of playing guitars comes from Dr Dan Yemin a punk rocker who perfected the sound in the band Lifetime. They sang about girls but they weren't really mopey or sad so they weren't emo. On the flipside, Jawbreaker didn't have the emo sound but sang about sadness and girls. They were more "serious" though. Both of those bands were punk rock and are considered important bands within the genre. Lifetime reunited late last year and put out a killer LP earlier this year. Dr Dan was also in lengendary melodic hardcore band Kid Dynamite. Probably the one band I most want to see, but they're broken up. Dan's in another hardcore band right now, Paint It Black named after the Stones song (I'm pretty sure).

Haha, that's actually pretty spot on although maybe Marie wasn't rareified white trash..(or has Paris not hooked up with a guy in a sideways hat and a wife beater yet..maybe thats Britney..)
EDIT: hey didn't your sig use to read "In these times, mere survival is a revolutionary act?" I like it better this way

We're both on medicaid. With my sister and her acute type 1 diabetes/recurring kidney failure, severe epilepsy, etc. , and me with my rheumatic heart and other sundry immune issues, there's no way we could make it without it.Do you think I could I could have afforded to just waltz into a hospital, and demand a lumbar puncture,to verify I did indeed have streptococcal meningitis, like I did this past May ? Unfortunately, while it does cover costly procedures,it does not cover the supplements I use, which cost me about $200.00 a month.Leaving me no money for anything other than food, and the ISP bills.
Yeah,I know,I thought I was living a lie as a libertarian, and finally wised up.Acute infection can do a lot to rewire one's brain.
