Tens of thousands of demonstrators from across the country converged on the Mall in Washington today to urge the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq as President Bush is proposing to send more troops in an effort to stabilize the country.

The enthusiastic crowd was generally good natured and orderly, waving hundreds of colorful placards and chanting slogans such as "Not another day, not another dollar" and "This is what democracy looks like."

The event, organized by the group United for Peace and Justice, appeared to draw fewer than the 100,000 people that authorities had estimated might come. It began with a rally at 11 a.m. and was followed by a march around the Capitol. Still the crowd was large enough that as the first marchers returned to the mall after going around the Capitol, there were still thousands left waiting to begin the march.

Mark Ballard, 30, of New York City, came wearing a replica army helmet that had glued on the top a doll representing President Bush holding assault weapons. "I don't do much protesting," he said. "I guess I came to this one because I've been complaining for four years. It's time to sacrifice a Saturday."

I was at the protest yesterday and the one in fall 05 and the mall grounds were filled back further yesterday than they were in 05. I believe corporate media conceeded there were half a million in 05 and I believe there must have been 500,000 yesterday. Lots of helicopters were flying overhead and I would love to see some aerial shots made available.

But did we really expect anything different from "mainstream" media? A group near me broke out in a chant: "We want coverage!" that brought lots of laughter.

We have to stop doing it for AP, New York Times, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, NPR, etc. because they have not been working in Americas' best interests for years now. We would not be in this war or being primed for the next war if corporate media had not been complicit in the lies and cheerleading for war.

There were lots and lots of media there yesterday. UFP&G ran out of badges by about 10:15 and there was still a long line of people who had pre-registered as press.

Independent media will get the word out. At some point people must take personal responsibilty for educating themselves and find better sources and a variety of information. Yesterday corporate media lived up to what we have all come to expect. No surpise to me.

Support independent media!

No surpise to me.

this estimate (made my UFP&J) at the end of their article, while putting up front (the very first sentence, in fact) the phrase "tens of thousands," which is only different by a factor of 40 or so.

Furthermore, the NYT article spends about 40% of its column space vomiting forth the views of attendees at a simultaneous DC "counter-protest," including a pro-war soldier (who lost his right leg in Iraq) who was "spat upon" by antiwar protestors.

sunk to this level of dishonesty, degeneracy & betrayal, it's past the point of redemption. The NYT, WaPo & TV news networks can longer be thought of, IMO, as "journalistic organizations who unfortunately made a few mistakes."

What they are now is profoundly & repeatedly disgraced. They have proven themselves corrupt to the core. Institutions like this can never be trusted again.

Institutions that have betrayed the public interest as these media organizations have (or as the 2 big-business parties have) can't be "reformed" in some limited & patchwork way. When corruption goes beyond a certain point, and becomes systemic, diseased institutions like these need to be replaced, & rebuilt from the ground up.

So it turns out Corporal Sparling is actually a rightwing celebrity activist, a well-known figure on Sean Hannity's show, whose family gets personal invites to SOTU speeches from Denny Hastert. Figures.

Been burned too many times.

They report the minority right-wing bullshit as fact when they know better. Most of us couldn't type the crap they do with a straight face.

I agree they are beyond salvage. The best we can hope for is an FCC in the public interest and with some teeth that will fine, ban or take away the broadcast licenses of media caught telling lies. That day's a long time in coming, though.

Getting in and out caused me to be way WAY later than I anticipated (in March I will MAKE SURE to arrive early).

I thought the Seattle protest in March 2003 was as big and inspiring and elevating and 'loving' and SAFE as any gathering could get,...but, I am still floating albeit, exhausted.

I got soooo lost *LOL*. Ended up sorta' following the herd until I connected with some folks from Mississipi who immediately 'adopted' me and I stuck with that FANTASTIC group. When the sun starting setting, I told them, "I need to get back to my sister's home" (having already told them about her cancer,...and the guilt she suspended from me about going to the protest rather than staying those hours with her when she said, "I WANT YOU TO GO! I want you to take my spirit with you!!!!"). They made sure I got back to the right station and one even accompanied me and made sure I got back to the stop where I parked my car.

Anyway, there was a SEA OF PEOPLE,...A SEA OF PEOPLE,...FROM ALL PARTS OF THIS WORLD, ALL WALKS OF LIFE!!! It seemed all humanity was present in some sense or other and ALL HUMANITY STOOD TOGETHER FOR EACHOTHER!!!.

That was my experience. I've never felt so elevated,...and, now, exhausted.

But, I can not conceive that there were merely tens of thousands in D.C. NOPE. Whomever is proposing that is lying.
