(APN) ATLANTA – He used to help produce hits for Ace of Base and Miami Sound Machine, but now Byron DeLear, 40, has a US Congressional seat in within his reach.

International, Political and Academic Leaders Rally in Support of De Lear Campaign Prior to World Peace Forum Presentation; and endorse Green Party candidate Byron De Lear for US House.

If he wins, he would become the first US House member representing the Green Party.

DeLear opposes Democratic 12-term incumbent US Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA 28th CD), who he paints as a Republican in Democrats’ clothing.

“There’s a perception third party candidates don’t have a chance. We’re offsetting that by getting votes,” De Lear told Atlanta Progressive News. “What we’re doing is getting voting commitments and voting blocks.”

“There’s a crisis of representation in Los Angeles in Howard Berman. 80% is opposed to the war,” yet Berman supported and funded it, De Lear said.

US Rep. Berman’s District is by far majority Democratic, 75%, DeLear says.

Thus, there is no way a Republican could ever win. Republicans are at about 20%.

So, “there’s no chance of spoilership. This could provide the perfect storm to send the first Green to DC,” DeLear says.

In other words, if DeLear takes substantial votes away from Berman, there are only two likely outcomes: either it’s enough for De Lear to win; or it’s not enough and Berman wins.

The winner needs only the most votes, not over 50%, to win, DeLear said.

“We just got endorsed by Darryl Hannah,” he adds.

DeLear seems disappointed, though, he has not gotten labor organization endorsements. “We run up against a lot of molasses,” he said. It’s apparently a sensitive issue.

There is a fierce debate among progressives over whether it is better to work within the Democratic Party to take America back for progressive principles, or whether to look to third party alternatives like the Green Party.

The prior view is promoted by organizations like Progressive Democrats of America (PDA). The latter is promoted, obviously, by the Greens.

But, the choice is not so either-or, De Lear told Atlanta Progressive News.

His campaign, no matter what, “will assist the progressive Democrats’ motivation in shifting the Democratic Party over,” DeLear said, adding, “The PDA’s need assistance.”

“If we’re able to draw attention to a need for a third party, that’s acceptable too,” he said.

The Green Party has gained national prominence in recent years by running US Presidential candidates like Ralph Nader and by being active on elections integrity issues while many Democrats were silent.

However, some have argued it is more reasonable to develop third party viability by getting Greens elected at the local level first.

This has already started in the State Legislatures, DeLear said.

There are currently Greens in Alaska and Maine’s Legislatures, and a Green was elected in California recently who switched to the Democrats after getting elected, he said.

US Rep. Berman’s record is so troubling, though, DeLear believes the time has come to move the Greens to the national level of legislative representation.

“Howard Berman actually had the bright idea to repeal the 22nd Amendment, which was term limits on the White House,” DeLear says.

Berman worked with US House Judiciary Committee Chairman, Rep. Sensenbrenner (R-WI), to give President Bush “the opportunity for a third term,” DeLear said.

“We’re talking about the Commander-in-Chief of the largest military machine of death in history,” DeLear said.

“The Bush Administration has gone totally extreme in its assault on civil liberties, and its doctrine of preemption,” DeLear said.

Electing a Green to DC instead of another Bush enabler will help shift the political dialogue in this country towards the values of working families, he argues.

“This would be a paradigm shift,” he said.

“We’ll get a lot off microphone time, even if I’m a bit of a pariah,” he said.

“Our nation is at a crossroads right now. We need some serious out of the box thinking,” he said.

Berman is the only Los Angeles area Democrat in US Congress to oppose a US exit strategy in Iraq, De Lear said.

Berman’s record mirrors that of US Sen. Joe Lieberman (D? I?-CT), who recently lost his Primary race this year.

DeLear also criticizes Berman for his support of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). “California lost more manufacturing jobs than anyother state,” he says.

“He has not been able to come out and say NAFTA’s been a tragedy,” he said.

DeLear worked in the entertainment industry for several years, and moved over to political work after reading some of Noam Chomsky’s writing, he said. DeLear went on to found Global Peace Solution, he said.

How does an Ace of Base producer go on to run for US Congress? “It’s kind of a cosmic joke,” he says. “But the song I produced was a remix of Lucky Love, so maybe I’m just lucky.”

because if hes gonna lose my 10+% then advertising it as a possible win is just going to prove more deflating than anything else

Its just a news article, not an advertising by the candidate. I don't know if there are poll numbers that back the assertion of the news article, but I do know
[link:www.delearforcongress.org/|http://www.delearforcongress.org/Portals/57ad7180-c5e7-49f5-b282-c6475cdb7ee7/headshot_101x120.jpg http://www.delearforcongress.org/portals/57ad7180-c5e7-49f5-b282-c6475cdb7ee7/slogan.gif][link:www.delearforcongress.org|Byron DeLears]'s probably the Green's most potent House candidate. The [link:www.cagreens.org/lacounty/|Green Party of LA County] is well organized, he's a fiery speaker, and is running a fairly well organized campaign.

[link:bergforcongress.us/|http://www.gp.org/photo/bergforcongress_sm.jpg][link:bergforcongress.us|Michael Berg] is also hot primarily because of his high name recognition.

When it comes to the US Senate
[link:www.aarondixon.org|http://www.aarondixon.org/video/30secspot.png][link:www.aarondixon.org|Aaron Dixon] of WA is our strongest Green Senate candidate. The GP of WA is fairly well organized and he's a very competent candidate really playing to win.

Probably the two strongest other Green Senate candidates are:

[link:www.todd4senate.org|http://www.todd4senate.org/files/images/todd_cindy_0.frontpage.jpg][link:www.todd4senate.org|Todd Chretien] in CA and

[link:www.voterae.org/|http://www.gp.org/images/2006peaceslate/vogeler_82.jpg][link:www.voterae.org/|RaeVogeler] in WI.

There are a number of other competitive Senate candidates and candidates for other seats, but these look to be the top US races.

[link:www.pat2006.com/|http://www.gp.org/photo/hs_lamarche_pat_2006_sm.jpg] [link:www.pat2006.com/|Pat LaMarche] for Governor of Maine is looking good. Pat was the Green Party of the US's candidate for Vice President of the US in 2004.

[link:www.aimeeallison.org|https://www.aimeeallison.org/themes/aimee/images/Gnd-Lk.jpg][link:www.aimeeallison.org|Aimee Allison] for Oakland City Council is considered to have a very good chance at winning. The [link:www.acgreens.org/|Green Party of Alameda County] is one of the strongest Green locals in the country and this position could leade to Allison launching into congress or beyond.

introduced in Maine or Arizona and featured on this weeks edition of NOW help Green candidates? I would think they would but the evidence doesn't seem to support that at least superficially..

unfortunately the Green Party of AZ is not fielding any state candidates. [link:216.92.191.78/elections/races.php?stateId=23&year=2006|Here's all the Maine Green Independent Party 2006 candidates] and they'll benefit from the Maine clean election laws. I think there is another state that has it too but its escaping my mind at the moment. And yes, I do think it will be of huge benefit to all third party candidates in the long run if not in the short run, indirectly if not directly. Especially Greens because we have an ironclad rule against accepting ANY corporate money (we take individual's campaign donations only). So for us Greens it will definitely help level the playing field.

In general IMO clean election laws are one of THE most important reforms we can enact (paper ballots counted by nonpartisan or multipartisan citizens being the other BIG one). Other laws like campaign spending caps and reinstatement of the fairness doctrine by the FCC will help a LOT too.

Here is the database of (almost 400) Green Parties candidates in 2006: http://www.greens.org/elections/
