Emotional Rather blasts 'new journalism order'
NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather said Monday that there is a climate of fear running through newsrooms stronger than he has ever seen in his more than four-decade career.

Addressing the Fordham University School of Law in Manhattan, occasionally forcing back tears, he said that in the intervening years, politicians "of every persuasion" had gotten better at applying pressure on the conglomerates that own the broadcast networks. He called it a "new journalism order."

He said this pressure -- along with the "dumbed-down, tarted-up" coverage, the advent of 24-hour cable competition and the chase for ratings and demographics -- has taken its toll on the news business. "All of this creates a bigger atmosphere of fear in newsrooms," Rather said.

Nevin asked Rather if he felt the same type of repressive forces in the Nixon administration as in the current Bush administration.

"No, I do not," Rather said. That's not to say there weren't forces trying to remove him from the White House beat while reporting on Watergate; but Rather said he felt supported by everyone above him, from Washington bureau chief Bill Small to then-news president Dick Salant and CBS chief William S. Paley.

"There was a connection between the leadership and the led . . . a sense of, 'we're in this together,"' Rather said. It's not that the then-leadership of CBS wasn't interested in shareholder value and profits, Rather said, but they also saw news as a public service. Rather said he knew very little of the intense pressure to remove him in the early 1970s because of his bosses' support.

When Rather cites the 'good old days' of being "supported" he leaves out that he was supported because he was doing his war-master's bidding by helping to stop the peace-mongering JFK and Nixon.

"Covering hurricanes is something I know something about," he said.
"It's been one of television news' finest moments," Rather said of the Katrina coverage. He likened it to the coverage of President Kennedy's assassination in 1963.
"They were willing to speak truth to power," Rather said of the coverage.

HA!

JFK-
Rather and CBS, along with the rest of the CIA-infiltrated media, did backflips to perpetuate the absurd Lone Gunman/Magic Bullet story. (Walter Cronkite was an especially egregious promoter of this cover-up.) Rather PERSONALLY lied about the direction of the gunfire and Kennedy's head motion in the Zaprueder film saying his head jerked forward, not back, to hide that shots came from in front Kennedy, especially the one that blew the back of his head off as a massive exit wound. This act of journalistic compliance with power started his meteoric rise to the top.

NIXON-

Nixon was betraying the Permanent War State by making peace overtures to China and the USSR and this caused the horrified Joint Chiefs of Staff to spy on the Oval Office.

Naval Intelligence officer Bob Woodward was regularly going to the White House to brief the JCS which is where he met Mark Felt, one of several FBI 'deep throats.'

Woodward then took a job as a 'cub reporter' at the CIA media outlet called the Washington Post to cover the biggest story of the day which neutralized Nixon, Watergate. Both CIA and JCS wanted to stop Nixon's peace-mongering, something Kennedy tried and died for. Too much money to be made in war and some really believe it is the only reliable way to organize human culture. Those two groups have allied and run the US for decades.

This is just another piece of history showing that the US government is an instrument of permanent war and anyone who gets in the way is neutralized the Kennedy way or the Nixon way.

So Dan Rather was doing his master's bidding back then by aiding the CIA coup against JFK and then Nixon. THAT'S why he was "supported" by the bosses of the CIA-run mainstream media. AND finally sabotaged when he was outting the seamy past of their latest corporate spokesmodel, GWB.

His strong personal emotions shows how conflicted he is about being first complicit, then targeted, and finally neutralized. He knows he danced with killers who are winning.

Years ago, when he had his book out, I heard snippets of a couple of different radio interviews with him where he obviously choked up: "We were wrong, terribly, terribly wrong." It was as if he were asking for forgiveness, tho couldn't bring himself to actually DO that (ask for forgiveness), but most of all needed to forgive himself.
